My voice to god in cries I sent
And he an eare vnto me bent
Yea him I sought in troubled times
When restless nights for paine declin's
The comforts his remembrances brings
To troubled soules opprest wth sins
Oft mornful thoughts myne eys kept wake
Nor could my tounge for anguish speake
Then came to mind those Haltion days
My night songs chanted to his praises
And in deepest silence on my bed
Wth myne owne hart I thus com̃uned
Wilt thou ô Lord cut of foreuer
And fauour from poore creaturs seuer
Is mercy from thee to far gon
Are promises noe more to be relied on
Hath god his gratious Nature left
And Anger from't his tender mercys reft
Ô sure said I this is noe other
Then frailtys that my faith would smother
But for preuention now said I
Remember wil I the most high
No god so great in powre as he
Whose way's best knowne is 'is santuary
Who hath by strengh his people freed
Euen th'ofspring of Jacob's holy seed
Whose wonders wrought 'boue Naturs law
Maid the depts tremble when they saw
Heauen's melting clouds send out a flux
Of water streames as th'Aquæducts
And wth an armed powre let flie
Thyn'arrowes through the thundring skie
Whose lightning gaue the world such light
As the earth did tremble at the sight
On deepest seas thy feet did goe
But none thy footsteps ther could show know
Through wch by Moyse's hand as on a Rock
Thou ledst thy people like a flock

Modernized Text

My voice to God in cries I sent
And he an ear unto me bent;
Yea, him I sought in troubled times
When restless nights for pain declined.
The comforts his remembrances brings
To troubled souls oppressed with sins.
Oft mournful thoughts mine eyes kept 'wake,
Nor could my tongue for anguish speak.
Then came to mind those halcyon days
[When] My night songs chanted to his praise
And in deepest silence on my bed
With mine own heart thus [I] communéd.
Wilt thou, oh Lord, cut off forever
And favour from poor creatures sever?
Is mercy from thee too far gone?
Are promises no more to be relied on?
Hath God his gratious nature left
And anger from't his tender mercies reft?
Oh sure, said I, this is no other
Than frailties that my faith would smother.
But for prevention now, said I,
Remember will I the most high.
No God so great in power as he
Whose way's best known is 'is [his] santuary,
Who hath by strength his people freed,
Even th'offspring of Jacob's holy seed,
Whose wonders wrought 'bove nature's law
Made the depths tremble when they saw
Heaven's melting clouds send out a flux
Of water streams as th'aqueducts,
And with an arméd power let fly
Thine arrows through the thund'ring sky,
Whose lightning gave the world such light
As the earth did tremble at the sight.
On deepest seas thy feet did go,
But none thy footsteps there could know,
Through which by Moses' hand, as on a rock,
Thou led'st thy people like a flock.
