Thomas Fairfax: The Editions

Frontispiece Markham Life of Fairfax
Portrait of Fairfax. Frontispiece from Markham's Life of Fairfax.

There are currently two publications that provide access to Fairfax's poetry in print, the first Clements Markham's Life of the Great Lord Fairfax (1870) and the second Edward Bliss Reed's edition of The Poems of Thomas Fairfax (1909).

  • Clements Markham, Appendix A, Life of the Great Lord Fairfax, Commander-in-chief of the Army of the Parliament of England (New York: Macmillan and Co., 1870), pp. 415–427
Full list of poems included in Appendix A.
  • Edward Bliss Reed (ed.), 'The Poems of Thomas Fairfax From MS. Fairfax 40 In the Bodleian Library, Oxford', Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 14 (1909), pp. 237–290.
A very limited selection of Fairfax's poetry from MS Fairfax 40. It includes only four of Fairfax's 150 Psalms, which reflects the secondary status often assigned to such works. Reed's selection replicates and only augments by one the poems included by Markham.
