34 Psal. 19 i.e. Psalm 34:19. [back to text]

Modernized Text

"Many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivereth him out of them all."

This text is a cordial to those that fall into affliction.

God can order our disorders to his glory and our good.

Doct[rine]:

1. That they that lie nearest God's heart may lie a long time, nevertheless, under his afflicting hand.

2. God doth not withdraw his affections in their afflictions.

3. Though many are the affllictions of the righteous yet he delivers them out of them all.

1. Many afflictions may fall on whom God dearly loves though not as tokens of his wrath: whom the Lord loveth he correcteth.

2. Who God aflicts to their good he dearly loves: he afflicteth the righteous for his proffit to make us partaker of his holiness.

3 [Those whom] God will receive to happiness those he corrects. There is no heir of heaven but he must pass through many troubles.

As many as I love I rebuke and chasten now. You see those who God loves may be men of afflictions.

What are those afflictions?

1. Those which come from within, [such] as corruptions, disorderly affection.

2. Those that come from without when God hideth his face, when Satan and the alluring world lay snares and temptations before us.

3. Sickness and outward troubles innumerable evil, saith Dauid, hath compassed me about; wherefore, saith Job, is life given to him that is in affliction; and Hezekiah chattered as a crane. Thus you see how the righteous is afflicted.

Troubles and afflictions on earth must prepare the way to heaven.

Reasons:

1. Because God would show them the great difference there is betwixt earth and heaven: here is misery and perturbations; in heaven fullness of joy.

2. To keep them in the right way.

3. Because he would have them to love heaven more by passing through many tribulations. Here long afflictions make us long for heaven.

[To humble them] God led Israel in a wilderness condition to humble them

5. That their faith and repentance might be tried.

6. That they may have experience of the power of God in all their afflictions. Fear not, thou worme Jacob, my ^God^[?] shall help thy infirmities.

7. That they may be weaned in their affections from the world – not the things of the world, but sett your affections on things above.

Lastlym that they may be the true disciples of Jesus Christ.

God had but one only son: though he were without sin yet he was not without affliction (1 Peter [esp. 4–5]): now are you disciples of Christ when you meet with afflictions in the world.

Here may be a word of caution to prepare for afflictions before they come these 4 ways:

1. By making sin your greatest affliction.

[2.] By choosing rather affliction then sin.

3. By prayng for a patient and suffering frame of heart in afflictions.

4. Beg not so much to remove them when they come as to sanctify it to us. [5] Receive afflictions when they come not as enemies but friends.

4 rules how to receive any afflictions:

1. Be submissive and silent. Do not fall into any carnal expressions: I was dumb, saith David, and opened not my mouth.

2. Welcome them by faith and confidence: Job said, Though thou kill me yet will I trust in thee (27 Psal.): I had fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

3. Bear thy afflictions with patience and contentment and say with Jeremy: I will bear the indignation of the Lord, for I have sinned against him.

4. By looking upon them as coming from a good God who would not afflict us if there were not cause for it. Yet he will not always let the rod of the wicked lie on the back of the righteous.

Then here is:

1. An use of terror to the ungodly: if the afflictions of the righteous be so many, surely the afflictions of the wicked shall not be numbered; if the righteous shall scarce be saved how shall the wicked be able to stand?

2. An use of comfort

[2.]1. Consider your deliverer is a companion with you in all your afflictions.

[2.]2. That God is more able to deliver you than Satan and the world is to keep you under afflictions. However, they are but for a moment but he is an everlasting salvation.

3. Use of exhortation in your afflictions. Make God your portion: Lord, I am thine and save me but whilst we are under them.

[3.]1. Be not discouraged with the darkness of thy condition seeing God can bring thee out of it. God never leaves thy soul but thy sin. God leaves thee for sin's sake, but if you forsake sin for God's sake he will return unto thee.

[3.]2. Though God suspend his love for a time, yet it is not forever. Joseph's bowels did yearn for his brethren when he seemed angry with them: much more God is tender to his children.

[3.]3. Though God may forsake you for a time, yet he will not forsake you forever.

Though he go away, yet he will come again and bring the comforter with him: the sun of God's spirit may set for a time but it shall rise with healing in his wings.

Lastly, be sure you do remember God is worthy to be waited on for deliverance. This is our God: we have waited on him. Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusted in thee.
